Callsign Collective Launch: Clothing, Community & Summer Events

A different kind of clothing launch

Callsign Collective didn’t start as a clothing brand in the usual sense.

It started with an idea - that a lot of aviation’s most interesting stories don’t get carried forward properly. They stay with the people who were there...in moments that don’t always make it into print.

The clothing comes from that.

Each piece is shaped by a specific aircraft, story, or detail - starting with the English Electric Lightning, and in particular XA847, the P1B prototype. The designs are kept simple, with references that are there if you recognise them, and still work if you don’t.

This isn’t about loud graphics or generic aviation merch.
It’s about understated clothing, built on aviation heritage.

What makes Callsign Collective different?

Callsign Collective sits somewhere between a clothing brand, a restoration project, and a community.

Led by former RAF Lightning pilot Ian Black, the first project focuses on restoring XA847 - an aircraft that played a key role in proving Britain could build a world-class supersonic fighter.

The clothing reflects that story.

But more than that, it creates a way for people to engage with it, not just by reading about it, but by wearing something connected to it.

Over time, the plan is simple:

  • Move on to other aircraft

  • Tell other stories

  • Build collections around each one

Each project becomes its own chapter.

Summer 2026: Bringing the community together

Alongside the launch of the clothing, Callsign Collective is beginning to organise a series of in-person aviation events across the UK.

These aren’t corporate events or large-scale airshows.

They’re smaller, more relaxed opportunities for people who share an interest in aviation - particularly the Lightning - to spend time together, hear the stories, and ask the questions you don’t usually get to ask.

Planned events include:

An evening with Ian Black — near Manston
A more informal setting, focused on conversation, stories from the cockpit, and the history behind the Lightning.

A day with Ian Black and Lightning pilots — near Abingdon (Aces High)
A chance to spend more time around the aircraft, meet other pilots, and hear first-hand accounts from those who flew them.

A northern event — location to be confirmed
We’re planning a third gathering further north, making it easier for more of the community to take part.

What to expect from the events

These events are designed to feel personal and accessible.

You won’t be stood at the back of a crowded hall.
You’ll be part of a group of people who already understand why these aircraft matter.

At each event, there will be opportunities to:

  • Hear directly from Ian Black and other Lightning pilots

  • Ask questions - including the ones you don’t usually get to ask

  • Meet others within the Callsign Collective community

  • Purchase limited items, including:

    • Signed prints

    • Aviation books

    • Exclusive or early-release clothing

It’s as much about the people as it is the aircraft.

Why this matters

The Lightning is where this begins - but it isn’t where it ends.

The long-term aim is to continue:

  • Restoring and highlighting significant aircraft

  • Sharing the stories behind them

  • Building a community around those who care about aviation history

And alongside that, continuing to produce clothing that reflects each project.

Not as merchandise, but as something more considered.
